Ethyl methoxycinnamate is a naturally derived compound originally isolated from Kaempferia galanga, a traditional medicinal plant native to South Asia. In skincare, it functions primarily as a UV absorber, helping to protect skin from sun damage by absorbing ultraviolet radiation.
Beyond its photoprotective role, research suggests this ingredient may also influence melanin production through cellular pathways, which has prompted investigation into its use in formulations addressing uneven skin tone.
How It Works
Ethyl methoxycinnamate works in two ways. As a UV filter, it absorbs incoming ultraviolet light and converts it to heat, providing photoprotection. As a potential melanin regulator, it appears to work indirectly by influencing the cellular signals and transcription factors that control melanin production, rather than directly blocking the tyrosinase enzyme.
Laboratory studies indicate it may reduce melanin synthesis in melanocytes when they are stimulated, though the relevance of these findings to human skin remains to be fully established.
