What Is Hydroxycaprylic Acid?

Hydroxycaprylic acid (HCA) is a naturally occurring hydroxy acid derived from caprylic acid, an 8-carbon fatty acid. It belongs to the same chemical family as better-known exfoliating acids like glycolic and lactic acid, but with a larger molecular structure that may penetrate skin differently.

In skincare formulations, HCA is primarily used as a skin conditioning agent. Unlike the more aggressive exfoliating hydroxy acids, its larger molecular size suggests a gentler profile, though research on its specific effects remains limited.

How It Works

Hydroxycaprylic acid works through multiple potential mechanisms. Its hydroxy acid structure enables gentle exfoliation or skin conditioning, whilst its fatty acid component may support the skin barrier. The larger molecular weight compared to smaller hydroxy acids means it likely penetrates more slowly and shallowly, potentially making it suitable for more sensitive skin.

Research using acoustic microscopy has indicated that HCA may influence the physical properties of the stratum corneum—the skin's outermost layer—affecting how it retains moisture and maintains structural density, though the clinical significance of these changes requires further investigation.

Clinical Evidence & References

Evidence for hydroxycaprylic acid remains emerging. Preliminary acoustic microscopy studies suggest it can alter the mechanical and hydration properties of the stratum corneum, but these findings are from controlled laboratory conditions rather than clinical trials on living skin.

More robust clinical data would help establish optimal concentrations, efficacy compared to other hydroxy acids, and suitability for different skin concerns. At present, it appears to be a gentler alternative to traditional exfoliating hydroxy acids, but claims about specific anti-ageing or acne benefits would benefit from further substantiation.

How to Use

If using a product containing hydroxycaprylic acid, start with once or twice weekly application to assess tolerance, then adjust frequency based on skin response. As with any hydroxy acid product, follow with a hydrating toner or essence and a broad-spectrum SPF during the day. If layering with other active ingredients, introduce them gradually to avoid over-treatment.

Safety & Precautions

Hydroxycaprylic acid is generally well-tolerated, though as with any hydroxy acid, mild irritation, redness or dryness may occur in sensitive individuals. Avoid use if pregnant or breastfeeding unless advised by a healthcare professional, and discontinue if persistent irritation develops.
