What Is Low Molecular Weight Hyaluronic Acid?

Low molecular weight hyaluronic acid (often shortened to LMW-HA) is hyaluronic acid whose long sugar chains have been deliberately shortened. On an ingredients list it usually appears as Sodium Hyaluronate, the sodium salt that is more stable and easier to formulate with than hyaluronic acid itself. That name covers every chain length, so it does not by itself tell you the weight — the INCI names Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid and Hydrolyzed Sodium Hyaluronate are the ones that specifically indicate shortened chains.

Hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan the body already makes, and it is one of the substances that keeps skin, joints and eyes hydrated. The cosmetic version is now almost always produced by bacterial fermentation rather than taken from animal sources, then filtered or broken down into different chain lengths, measured in kilodaltons (kDa).

There is no legally standardised cut-off for "low molecular weight". In practice most suppliers apply the term to chains under roughly 500 kDa, while many brands reserve it for smaller fragments below about 50 kDa. Anything under around 10 kDa is usually labelled oligo-hyaluronic acid or hyaluronic acid oligosaccharides. Because the phrase means different things to different companies, two products both promising "low molecular weight" may contain very different things, and few brands publish the actual kDa figure.

You will find it in hydrating serums, essences, sheet masks, eye creams, lightweight gel moisturisers and post-treatment products. It is very often blended with medium and high weights in what brands market as multi-weight or multi-molecular hyaluronic acid.

How It Works

Hyaluronic acid works as a humectant. Its sugar backbone carries carboxyl and hydroxyl groups that hold onto water through hydrogen bonding, so a small amount can bind many times its own weight in water. That bound water is what makes skin look full and feel supple rather than tight.

Chain length changes how it behaves, not what it does. Long chains form a viscous, film-like layer that sits on the surface and slows water loss. Short chains make thinner, less gel-like solutions that spread more easily and can work their way between the flattened cells of the stratum corneum, the outermost layer. Tape-stripping research in volunteers has shown hyaluronic acid accumulating within the stratum corneum over repeated daily use, and remaining there between applications.

What happens below that is far less certain. The assays used in those studies could not reliably measure hyaluronic acid in the living epidermis or dermis, and older laboratory work found that topically applied hyaluronic acid did not meaningfully cross the barrier at all. Claims that low molecular weight versions travel deep into the dermis run ahead of the published evidence.

Holding water high in the stratum corneum is still visible: the surface swells very slightly, light reflects more evenly, and fine lines look softer while skin is well hydrated.

How to Use

Low molecular weight hyaluronic acid is easy to slot into a routine, but it needs sealing in.

  • Apply to damp skin — smooth it on straight after cleansing or a mist, while there is still water at the surface for it to hold onto.
  • Always follow with a moisturiser. A humectant left bare in cold or air-conditioned rooms can leave skin feeling tighter than before.
  • Once or twice daily is standard; there is no tolerance to build and no need to phase it in.
  • Typical use levels in leave-on formulas sit at roughly 0.1–2% total hyaluronic acid. More is not better — high percentages can feel sticky.
  • It is pH-tolerant across the range used in skincare, so it layers happily with vitamin C, niacinamide, exfoliating acids and retinoids.
  • Multi-weight blends are worth looking for if you want both a smoother-looking surface and a longer-lasting hydrated finish.
  • In very dry air, use it under a richer cream rather than on its own.

Safety & Precautions

Hyaluronic acid and sodium hyaluronate have a long record of safe cosmetic use and are among the least irritating ingredients in skincare. Genuine allergy is rare, and they are generally considered suitable for sensitive, blemish-prone and barrier-compromised skin. Hyaluronic acid is not photosensitising, so no extra sun precautions apply beyond your usual daily SPF.

  • Stinging is usually down to something else in the formula — fragrance, preservatives, alcohol — rather than the hyaluronic acid.
  • Left bare in very dry air, a humectant can make skin feel tight, so always seal it in.
  • Topical use is not known to be a concern in pregnancy or breastfeeding, though check with your midwife or GP if unsure.
  • Stop using on broken skin and speak to a pharmacist or GP.
