What Is Lz1 Peptide?
Lz1 peptide is a synthetically designed peptide comprising 15 amino acid residues. It functions as an antimicrobial agent, specifically targeting the bacteria most commonly associated with acne vulgaris, including Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus species.
Rather than simply killing bacteria indiscriminately, Lz1 peptide appears to work through a dual mechanism: it inhibits bacterial growth whilst simultaneously dampening the inflammatory cascade triggered by these pathogens. This targeted approach may help address both the cause and the symptom of acne.
How It Works
Lz1 peptide inhibits the growth and activity of acne-causing bacteria at remarkably low concentrations—approximately four times more potent than the antibiotic clindamycin against P. acnes. Once bacteria are suppressed, the peptide further reduces inflammatory signalling by limiting the release of molecules such as TNF-α and IL-1β, which would normally trigger redness, swelling and discomfort.
This two-pronged approach—reducing bacterial load whilst simultaneously calming the inflammatory response—may help prevent both the formation of new lesions and the persistent inflammation that characterises acne.
Clinical Evidence & References
In-vitro studies and preliminary animal models show promising results. Laboratory testing demonstrates that Lz1 peptide is highly effective against multiple acne-causing bacterial strains at very low doses. In an experimental mouse model, the peptide reduced P. acnes colonisation, decreased ear swelling and reduced inflammatory cell infiltration.
However, human clinical trial data in published literature is currently limited. Whilst the mechanism and preliminary evidence are encouraging, further studies in human subjects are needed to confirm efficacy, optimal concentrations and long-term safety in cosmetic formulations.

How to Use
Lz1 peptide is typically incorporated into serums, targeted treatments or cleansing products. Since research is still emerging, follow product instructions carefully and allow 4–8 weeks of consistent use to assess any effects on acne lesions or inflammation. It can be layered with other acne-fighting ingredients, though combining multiple active treatments should be approached gradually to monitor skin tolerance.
