What Is Ovalicin?
Ovalicin is a secondary metabolite produced by the fungus Metarhizium anisopliae. Originally identified for its use as a biological pest control agent in agriculture, it has recently become a subject of skincare research due to its immunomodulatory properties.
In skincare formulations, ovalicin is being studied for its potential to address inflammatory skin conditions, particularly those involving itching and allergic responses. Its mechanism centres on dampening certain inflammatory signalling pathways in the skin.
How It Works
Ovalicin appears to work by interrupting signalling pathways that trigger itching and inflammation. Specifically, it inhibits interleukin-31 (IL-31) signalling and reduces intracellular calcium influx—both processes known to amplify itching sensations and mast cell activation in inflammatory skin conditions.
By suppressing these pathways, ovalicin may reduce the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators, thereby reducing the urge to scratch and the underlying inflammatory cascade.
Clinical Evidence & References
Early research in animal and cell models shows promising results. Studies indicate that ovalicin may reduce scratching behaviour in a dose-dependent manner and suppress mast cell degranulation by up to 65%. In one cell-based model, its anti-inflammatory effects were reported to exceed those of dexamethasone, a potent corticosteroid.
However, human clinical trials remain limited. Current evidence is largely confined to laboratory and animal studies, so its efficacy and tolerability in human skincare require further investigation. It is not yet a widely established ingredient in skincare products.
How to Use
Ovalicin-containing products are not yet commonplace in skincare. If you are using a formulation that includes this ingredient, follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding application frequency and concentration. As research is ongoing, patch testing on a small area first is sensible, particularly if you have a history of skin sensitivity or allergic responses.
