What Is Sodium Xylenesulfonate?

Sodium xylenesulfonate is a synthetic hydrotrope—a type of chemical that improves how well water can dissolve other molecules. It is derived from xylene (a petroleum-based chemical) and is widely used in both skincare and household cleaning products to stabilise formulations and keep ingredients mixed evenly throughout a product.

In skincare, it serves a behind-the-scenes role rather than delivering direct skin benefits. Its primary function is to ensure that active ingredients and fragrances remain properly dissolved and distributed, which helps maintain product stability and efficacy over time.

How It Works

Sodium xylenesulfonate works by acting as a bridge between water and oil-soluble ingredients. Some molecules are hydrophobic (water-repelling) and would normally separate from water-based formulations. As a hydrotrope, sodium xylenesulfonate surrounds these molecules and allows them to remain dissolved in water, preventing separation and maintaining a uniform texture throughout the product's shelf life.

Clinical Evidence & References

Sodium xylenesulfonate has been assessed for safety in dermal and systemic toxicology studies conducted on animals. At the concentrations used in skincare products (typically well under 1%), it has not been associated with significant adverse effects in standard safety testing. However, direct clinical evidence examining its efficacy as a solubiliser in human skin applications is limited, as its role is primarily functional rather than therapeutic.

How to Use

Sodium xylenesulfonate is a formulation ingredient rather than an active, so there are no specific usage guidelines to follow. It works passively within products you apply normally. If you use products containing this ingredient, follow the application instructions for the product itself.

Safety & Precautions

Sodium xylenesulfonate is generally well-tolerated at the low concentrations found in skincare. It is not known to cause irritation or sensitisation at typical usage levels.
