What Is Xylene?
Xylene is an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent commonly used in cosmetic formulations. It functions as a masking agent, fragrance component, and solvent — helping to dissolve and stabilise other ingredients, particularly fragrance compounds, within a product.
In skincare products, xylene appears in relatively small concentrations as part of the formulary infrastructure rather than as an active treatment ingredient. It is volatile, meaning it evaporates readily from the skin surface after application.
How It Works
Xylene dissolves and holds fragrance molecules and other hydrophobic (water-repelling) ingredients in suspension, preventing them from separating or settling. Its volatile nature means it tends to evaporate quickly from the skin after application, leaving behind the dissolved components.
Clinical Evidence & References
Evidence specifically examining xylene's effects on skin remains limited in the skincare context. Research in occupational settings shows that repeated or prolonged skin exposure to xylene can cause irritation, though such studies typically involve industrial concentrations much higher than those found in cosmetic formulations.
There is no robust clinical evidence that xylene causes acne or significantly worsens oily skin at the concentrations used in cosmetics, though individual sensitivity varies. People with sensitive or reactive skin may wish to minimise exposure to fragrance-containing products generally.

How to Use
Most people using fragranced skincare products containing xylene will experience no issues. If you prefer to avoid fragrance altogether, check ingredient lists for xylene and related solvents, or opt for fragrance-free formulations. Patch test any new product on a small area first if you have known sensitivities.
