Your skin has a preferred pH. Stray too far from it and things start to go quietly wrong — dryness, sensitivity, the odd breakout that won't explain itself. Understanding pH is one of those small pieces of knowledge that quietly makes an entire routine work better.

What does skin pH actually measure?

pH is a scale from 0 to 14 that shows how acidic or alkaline something is. Water sits at 7, right in the middle, which is neutral. Below 7 is acidic; above 7 is alkaline. Healthy skin sits at roughly 4.5 to 5.5 — slightly acidic. That thin acidic film on the surface has a name: the acid mantle, and it does more than most people realise.

Why does the acid mantle matter?

It keeps troublesome bacteria out. The skin's mild acidity makes the surface an awkward place for unwanted microbes to settle, while the microbes that belong there get on fine. Push the pH out of balance and that tips the wrong way.

It keeps skin's own processes running. The enzymes that manage shedding and renewal work best in a mildly acidic range, and slow down when things get too alkaline.

It helps skin hold onto moisture. A balanced acid mantle helps lock hydration in; alkaline products can undermine that, letting water escape more easily and leaving skin feeling tight and parched.

How do your products move skin pH?

Low pH, roughly 2.5 to 4. Your active exfoliants and brighteners live here — AHA toners and peels, vitamin C serums made with L-ascorbic acid, and BHA treatments. They're deliberately acidic because that's what lets them do their job — just follow them with something that lets skin settle back afterwards.

Skin-friendly, around 4.5 to 6. This is where daily basics belong: gentle cleansers, moisturisers, and most everyday serums.

High pH, 7 and up. Worth avoiding unless a product is specifically built for it — bar soaps, which often sit around 9 or 10, some clay masks, and old-fashioned alkaline cleansers. That squeaky-clean feeling after a bar of soap is your acid mantle taking a hit.

What are the signs your skin pH is off?

  • Dryness or tightness that lingers
  • More redness or reactivity than usual
  • Breakouts turning up more often
  • A tight, squeaky feeling straight after cleansing
  • Products that suddenly sting when they never used to

One of these on its own might be nothing. Two or three together is a pattern worth acting on.

How do you keep skin pH in balance?

  • Choose a pH-balanced cleanser, ideally around 5 to 6 — this is the single biggest lever.
  • Give low-pH actives a little time to work before layering over them.
  • Seal everything in with a moisturiser.
  • Go easy on acids — over-exfoliating is one of the fastest ways to knock pH sideways.

Cleansing is where most of it goes wrong, because it's the moment skin's surface is most exposed. An old-fashioned foaming wash that leaves skin feeling tight isn't doing you a favour — that tightness is the barrier telling you it's been pushed too far alkaline.
