Medik8 Intelligent Retinol Eye TR Review

Medik8 Intelligent Retinol Eye TR in a lifestyle bathroom setting — Skintique review

The Verdict

Intelligent Retinol Eye TR is a sensibly judged eye-specific entry point into Medik8's retinol system: 0.1% is a low, considered concentration for delicate skin, the climbazole and Time Release Technology carry over from the brand's face formula, and the spatula applicator keeps things hygienic. It isn't the strongest vitamin A eye treatment Medik8 makes and it won't outperform pairing a full-strength face retinoid with a dedicated eye cream, but as a gentle, focused way to introduce retinol around the eyes — or to sit alongside a higher-strength face serum — it does a clearly defined job well. Medik8 Intelligent Retinol Eye TR is a fragrance-free night serum for the eye area, combining 0.1% retinol with climbazole and Time Release Technology to release the active gradually while you sleep. Vitamin E and safflower seed oil support the delicate skin barrier. It's designed to help improve the appearance of fine lines, crow's feet and uneven texture around the eyes over time.

What is Intelligent Retinol Eye TR?

This is the eye-specific version of Medik8's Intelligent Retinol TR system, at a lower 0.1% concentration for the thinner, more reactive skin around the eyes. It uses climbazole — which Medik8 says helps prolong retinol's activity by slowing the enzymes that break down retinoic acid — alongside the brand's Time Release Technology, encapsulating the retinol for gradual overnight delivery. The formula is water-free and fragrance-free, applied with a spatula-style applicator for hygienic, precise dosing around the orbital bone.

Key ingredients

Retinol is the vitamin A active, at 0.1% — lower than Medik8's face range, which starts at 0.3%. It needs to convert in skin before becoming active, and works over time to help improve the appearance of fine lines, crow's feet and uneven texture.

Climbazole is included to help extend how long active vitamin A remains available, by blocking the CYP26 enzymes that break retinoic acid down — the same mechanism Medik8 uses across its Intelligent Retinol range, at a strength suited to the eye area.

Vitamin E and safflower seed oil add antioxidant and barrier support. Vitamin E helps protect against free radical damage and stabilises the formula; safflower seed oil is a lightweight carrier oil that keeps the fast-absorbing texture comfortable on thin eye-area skin.

How to use it

  • When: Evening only — vitamin A increases sun sensitivity, so it isn't formulated for daytime use.
  • How much: A small amount on the spatula, gently patted around the orbital bone rather than rubbed in or applied to the eyelid.
  • Order: After cleansing and any face vitamin A serum, before your usual eye cream or moisturiser.
  • Phasing in: If you're new to retinol around the eyes, start with a couple of nights a week before building up to nightly use.
  • Next morning: Daily SPF around the eyes is worth keeping up whenever you're using a vitamin A product.

Who it's for

  • Anyone wanting to introduce retinol to the eye area at a gentle, considered concentration
  • Those noticing early fine lines, crow's feet or uneven texture around the eyes
  • People who've found stronger vitamin A eye treatments too irritating on this thinner skin
  • Anyone already using a Medik8 face retinol who wants a dedicated, lower-strength eye step

Who should skip it

  • Anyone chasing the strongest result on established lines — a higher-strength eye treatment, or a full-strength face retinoid applied carefully near the orbital bone, will generally do more
  • Those with a diagnosed skin condition, including rosacea or eczema, without first checking in with our team or a dermatologist
  • Anyone new to retinoids altogether who hasn't yet built tolerance on the face, where irritation is easier to manage

If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, please contact our team for advice before use — we don't state a blanket safe/unsafe position on vitamin A products in our reviews.

How it fits with the rest of the range

Intelligent Retinol Eye TR shares its core technology with Intelligent Retinol TR, the face version built around the same climbazole-boosted retinol across a 3TR/6TR/10TR strength ladder. Weighing a dedicated retinol eye serum against a peptide-led alternative designed to follow a vitamin A face serum? Our Advanced Night Eye review covers that approach. FAQs

Can I use this if I've never used retinol before?

Yes — 0.1% is a gentle starting concentration, and the eye area is generally more reactive than the face, so introducing it gradually (a couple of nights a week to start) is worth doing even if you're already comfortable with retinol elsewhere.

How is this different from the face version, Intelligent Retinol TR?

Intelligent Retinol TR is sold across three strengths from 0.3% to 1% retinol for the face. Intelligent Retinol Eye TR uses a single, lower 0.1% concentration formulated for the thinner skin around the eyes, with a spatula applicator for more precise dosing.

Can I use this alongside my regular eye cream?

Yes — apply this serum first on cleansed skin, then follow with your usual eye cream or moisturiser once it's absorbed. It's designed to sit underneath, not replace, your existing eye care step.
