What's the difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin?
Dry skin (clinically, xerosis) is a skin type. It describes skin that produces less sebum — the oily, lipid-rich film that helps hold moisture in. It’s partly genetic, and it usually stays with you as a baseline, becoming more noticeable in colder months.
Dehydrated skin is a condition: a temporary lack of water in the upper layers. Any skin type can become dehydrated — including oily and combination skin. How can you test whether your skin is dry or dehydrated?
The pinch test. Gently pinch a small area of skin on your cheek and hold for a second or two, then release. Well-hydrated skin springs back quickly. If it’s slow to settle or holds a slight crinkle, that leans towards dehydration — the upper layers are short of water and less “plump”. It’s a rough guide rather than a diagnosis (age and overall hydration affect it), but it’s a useful nudge.
The cleanse-and-wait test. Cleanse with a mild wash, pat dry, then apply nothing. Wait about 20–30 minutes and notice what happens. If skin feels tight and looks flaky more or less everywhere, that’s consistent with a dry type lacking oil. - Using hyaluronic acid alone in dry air. Humectants can draw water from deeper skin if there’s nothing to seal them; always follow with a moisturiser.
- Reaching for heavy oils on dehydrated, oily skin. They address a lack you may not have, while the real gap — water — goes unmet.
