Humectants are the quiet workhorses of a hydrating routine. If your serum leaves skin feeling plumper and your moisturiser stops it drying out by mid-afternoon, there is almost certainly a humectant doing the heavy lifting. Yet they are widely misunderstood — including the myth that they can dry skin out in the wrong conditions. This guide explains what humectants actually are, how they differ from emollients and occlusives, which ones are worth knowing, and how to use them so they work with your skin rather than against it.
What is a humectant?
A humectant is an ingredient that attracts and binds water. In skincare, its job is to draw moisture towards the upper layers of the skin — the stratum corneum — and help hold it there. Humectants are water-loving (hydrophilic) molecules, which is why they feel light and absorb quickly rather than sitting on the surface like an oil.
Your skin already makes its own humectants. The stratum corneum contains a set of water-binding compounds collectively called the natural moisturising factor (NMF), which includes amino acids, urea and lactic acid. When the NMF runs low — through age, over-cleansing or a compromised barrier — skin holds water less efficiently and can feel tight or look dull. Topical humectants top up that water-holding capacity, which is why they leave skin feeling smoother and more supple.
Crucially, a humectant hydrates but does not, on its own, seal that water in. That distinction matters, and it is where emollients and occlusives come in.
Humectant vs emollient vs occlusive
Most good moisturisers combine all three of these ingredient types. They are not competing categories — they are three different jobs. A humectant supplies water, an emollient smooths and softens, and an occlusive locks everything in by slowing water loss from the surface. Understanding the split makes it far easier to read an ingredients list and build a routine that holds hydration through the day.

The reason this matters: a humectant applied on its own, with nothing to slow evaporation, can lose the water it has gathered back to the air. Pair it with an emollient or occlusive and the water it draws in stays put, so the skin feels hydrated for longer.
Common humectants worth knowing
Not all humectants behave identically. Some are small molecules that penetrate more readily; others are larger and work mainly at the surface. Here are the ones you will see most often on UK ingredients lists.
- Glycerin — the most studied and reliable humectant of all. It is small, effective at low concentrations and plays well with almost every other ingredient. - Hyaluronic acid — a large molecule that holds a great deal of water and gives that instant plumping feel. Lower-weight versions sit deeper in the stratum corneum, while higher-weight versions work more on the surface. Many serums blend several weights.
- Glycols (such as propylene glycol and butylene glycol) — lightweight humectants that also help other ingredients spread and absorb. They are common in gel textures and lightweight lotions.
- Urea — a component of the skin's own NMF. At lower percentages it hydrates; at higher percentages it also helps soften rough, flaky texture.
- Panthenol (provitamin B5) — a humectant that also has a soothing, barrier-supporting reputation, which makes it popular in products aimed at sensitive or reactive skin.
- Honey — a natural humectant used in masks and cleansers; it attracts water and adds a comforting slip, though it is less precise to formulate with than the ingredients above.
How to use humectants without them backfiring
You may have read that humectants can pull water out of your skin. There is a grain of truth to it, but it is easily managed. Humectants draw water from wherever it is most available. In a humid room, that is the air. In very dry air — winter central heating, a long-haul flight, an arid climate — there is little moisture in the air to pull from, so a humectant applied to bare skin and left exposed can draw water from the deeper layers instead, then lose it to evaporation.
The fix is simple: never leave a humectant as your final, exposed step in dry conditions. Follow these principles and it works in your favour every time.
- Apply to slightly damp skin. A humectant has more water to grab straight after cleansing, so pat on your serum before the skin fully dries.
- Always seal it. Layer a moisturiser containing emollients or an occlusive over the top. This is the single most important step — it traps the water the humectant has gathered and stops it escaping to dry air.
- Adjust for the season. In cold, dry, heated months lean on richer occlusive layers; in humid summer weather a lighter seal is usually enough.
- Do not rely on a humidifier alone. Raising room humidity helps, but sealing the skin is what makes the difference.

Are humectants and hyaluronic acid the same thing?
Not quite. Hyaluronic acid is one type of humectant, but the category is much broader. Glycerin, glycols, urea, panthenol and honey are all humectants too. Hyaluronic acid is simply one of the best known because it holds a large amount of water and gives skin an immediate plumped feel.
Can humectants dry out my skin?
Only if used poorly. In very dry air, a humectant left uncovered can draw water from deeper skin and lose it to evaporation. Apply it to damp skin and seal it with a moisturiser or occlusive on top, and this simply does not happen — the water stays where you want it.
Which is the best humectant for everyday use?
Glycerin is the most reliable all-rounder. It is well tolerated, effective at low levels, supports the moisture barrier and suits nearly every skin type. Many people happily use glycerin and hyaluronic acid together, since they work in slightly different ways and complement each other well.
Do I still need a moisturiser if my serum has humectants?
Usually yes. A humectant serum attracts water, but it needs something to seal that water in. A moisturiser supplies the emollients and occlusive elements that slow water loss, so pairing the two gives far longer-lasting comfort than a humectant used on its own.
