This small habit noticeably improves how plump and comfortable skin feels, and it costs nothing.

There is a caveat. In very dry air, a humectant on a dry surface with nothing sealed over the top can pull water upward from lower layers and let it evaporate, leaving skin feeling tighter rather than softer. The fix is simple: always follow a humectant with an emollient or occlusive step, and lean on damp application when the environment is dry.

A logical sequence lets each layer do its job. Broadly, apply from thinnest to richest so lightweight, water-based products reach the skin before heavier ones seal them in.

Start by cleansing with something gentle that does not leave skin squeaky and stripped. Next, while skin is still damp, apply water-based hydrating steps such as a humectant serum. Follow with any treatment products your routine includes, then a moisturiser that combines emollients and a degree of occlusion to smooth and seal. In the morning, finish with a broad-spectrum SPF, which also adds a layer of protection against the environmental stress that dries skin out.
