iS Clinical Extreme Protect SPF 30 Review

The Verdict

A genuinely lighter, faster-absorbing daily SPF, but the only iS Clinical sunscreen with a chemical UV filter alongside the mineral one. Good for everyday wear if you're not specifically avoiding chemical filters; choose Extreme Protect SPF 40 or Eclipse SPF 50+ instead if you are.

What is iS Clinical Extreme Protect SPF 30?

iS Clinical Extreme Protect SPF 30 is a daily facial sunscreen and the one hybrid formula in the brand's four-strong UK sunscreen line-up. Unlike its two mineral-only siblings, it combines a chemical UV filter with a mineral one: Octinoxate 5.50% alongside Zinc Oxide 4.12%. The trade-off for adding a chemical filter is texture – this is the lightest, fastest-absorbing sunscreen in the range, built on the brand's Extremozyme® botanical-enzyme complex and sold in a 100g tube.

Active ingredients

IngredientTypeRole
Octinoxate 5.50%Chemical (organic) UV filterAbsorbs UVB rays; contributes to the lightweight, fast-absorbing finish
Zinc Oxide 4.12%Mineral (physical) UV filterReflects and scatters broad-spectrum UVA/UVB rays

Why the hybrid formula matters

iS Clinical's other two facial sunscreens – Extreme Protect SPF 40 and Eclipse SPF 50+ – are both confirmed 100% mineral, built on zinc oxide and titanium dioxide with no chemical filters. Extreme Protect SPF 30 is the exception in the range: adding Octinoxate is what gives it a lighter, quicker-absorbing, more "invisible" finish than the richer mineral-only formulas, but it also means this isn't the pick if you're specifically avoiding chemical UV filters.

That distinction is worth flagging with a clinician or aesthetician if you're choosing between the three for sensitive, reactive or recently-treated skin, or if you've been advised to avoid chemical filters specifically – the mineral-only siblings are the more straightforward substitute in that case.

Who it's for

  • Anyone wanting a lightweight, fast-absorbing, natural-finish daily SPF for everyday wear under makeup
  • Those not specifically avoiding chemical UV filters
  • People who find mineral-only sunscreens too rich or slow to set in as their everyday face SPF

Who might prefer a different iS Clinical sunscreen

If you're avoiding chemical UV filters – whether by personal preference, sensitivity, or a clinician's advice around post-procedure or reactive skin – Extreme Protect SPF 40 or Eclipse SPF 50+ are the mineral-only alternatives in the range. Our iS Clinical sunscreens guide lays out all four side by side by filter type, SPF number and finish.

How to use iS Clinical Extreme Protect SPF 30

  • Apply as the final step of your morning routine, after moisturiser and before makeup.
  • Use a generous, even layer across the face – sunscreen is under-applied more often than over-applied.
  • Reapply through the day if you're in direct sun for an extended period, following standard sunscreen reapplication guidance (roughly every two hours, or after swimming or heavy sweating).
  • Wear daily, not just on sunny days – UVA exposure happens year-round, including through cloud and glass.

What to expect

Because the formula leads with a lighter texture than iS Clinical's mineral-only sunscreens, it tends to sit less visibly on the skin and layer more easily under makeup or a tinted moisturiser, without the initial richness some mineral formulas have before they set. As with any facial sunscreen, consistency matters more than the specific SPF number – the protective benefit comes from applying it generously, every morning, and reapplying if you're in direct sun for extended periods, rather than from any one product working harder than another.

Safety and patch testing

If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, please contact our team for advice before use. If you've been advised to avoid chemical UV filters specifically, check with your clinician or aesthetician before choosing this formula over a mineral-only sunscreen. As with any new skincare product, patch test first if you have sensitive or reactive skin, and stop use if irritation occurs.
