Medik8 Retinol 3TR™ is the brand's original 0.3% retinol serum, built for anyone starting a vitamin A routine. What Retinol 3TR™ actually is

Retinol 3TR™ is a 15ml night serum built around a single active: 0.3% pure retinol, a well-established form of vitamin A. It's suspended in a jojoba oil base rather than a water-based gel, which is a deliberate formulation choice — oil helps stabilise retinol (a notoriously unstable ingredient that degrades in light and air) and gives the serum a lightweight, dry-touch finish rather than a heavy or greasy one.

The other defining feature is Medik8's Time Release Technology. Rather than releasing all of its retinol onto the skin at once, the serum uses a polymer reservoir system that lets the active out gradually over several hours. In practice, that's the mechanism behind why 3TR is positioned as one of the more wearable retinol options — a slower release generally means less of the tightness, flaking or redness that can come with a sudden hit of active vitamin A.

What it feels like to use

It sinks in within a minute or two rather than sitting on the surface, which makes it easy to follow with a moisturiser without the two products sliding around on top of each other. There's a faint scent from the formula's ingredients rather than any added fragrance.

Layering it with the rest of your routine

Retinol 3TR™ is designed to be the last step of an evening routine, applied after cleansing (and after any water-based serums) and before your night moisturiser. Most people don't see a dramatic change after a few applications — the appearance of fine lines, uneven texture and dullness typically starts to shift only with consistent, regular use over several weeks, and results will vary from person to person. If your skin is reacting rather than adjusting — persistent redness, flaking or discomfort that doesn't settle — that's a sign to ease off frequency rather than push through.

How to use it

Retinol 3TR™ is a PM-only product. Apply it to clean, dry skin in the evening, after cleansing and before your night moisturiser. Our verdict

Retinol 3TR™ does what it's designed to do: it gives first-time or sensitised retinol users a genuinely gentle way to start, without diluting the formula down to something that barely qualifies as a retinol product. The jojoba base and Time Release delivery are sensible, well-thought-through choices rather than marketing dressing, and 0.3% is a realistic starting concentration rather than a token one. Where it falls short is for anyone who's already retinol-tolerant and wants a noticeably stronger night serum — that's a reason to look further up Medik8's range, not a mark against 3TR itself.
