Medik8 Retinol 3TR™

The Verdict

A dependable, gentle way in to retinol rather than a step up for anyone already using a stronger formula. If you're brand new to vitamin A, or you've reacted to other retinol products in the past, 3TR's 0.3% strength and slow-release jojoba base make it one of the more comfortable ways to start. It isn't the most powerful serum in Medik8's line-up, but that's the point.

Medik8 Retinol 3TR™ is the brand's original 0.3% retinol serum, built for anyone starting a vitamin A routine. Housed in a jojoba oil base with Time Release Technology to release retinol gradually overnight, it's designed for PM-only use as part of a phased-in routine, helping to improve the appearance of fine lines, uneven texture and tone.

What Retinol 3TR™ actually is

Retinol 3TR™ is a 15ml night serum built around a single active: 0.3% pure retinol, a well-established form of vitamin A. It's suspended in a jojoba oil base rather than a water-based gel, which is a deliberate formulation choice — oil helps stabilise retinol (a notoriously unstable ingredient that degrades in light and air) and gives the serum a lightweight, dry-touch finish rather than a heavy or greasy one.

The other defining feature is Medik8's Time Release Technology. Rather than releasing all of its retinol onto the skin at once, the serum uses a polymer reservoir system that lets the active out gradually over several hours. In practice, that's the mechanism behind why 3TR is positioned as one of the more wearable retinol options — a slower release generally means less of the tightness, flaking or redness that can come with a sudden hit of active vitamin A.

Key ingredients

  • Retinol (0.3%) — a vitamin A derivative that converts to retinoic acid in the skin. See our Retinol glossary entry for how it works and how it differs from other vitamin A derivatives like retinal or tretinoin.
  • Jojoba Oil — the serum's base oil. It closely resembles skin's own sebum, which is part of why the formula feels lightweight rather than occlusive, and it helps keep the retinol stable in the bottle.
  • Vitamin E — an antioxidant included to help protect the retinol molecule itself and support the skin's barrier. Read more in our Vitamin E glossary entry.

There's no fragrance, no exfoliating acid and no secondary active competing for attention in the formula — it's a single-active serum built to do one job. That simplicity is useful if you're also trying to work out what your skin does and doesn't tolerate, since there's little else in the bottle that could be responsible for any reaction.

What it feels like to use

The jojoba oil base gives Retinol 3TR™ a lightweight, dry-touch finish rather than the heavier, almost balm-like feel of some oil-based retinol serums. It sinks in within a minute or two rather than sitting on the surface, which makes it easy to follow with a moisturiser without the two products sliding around on top of each other. There's a faint scent from the formula's ingredients rather than any added fragrance.

Because the retinol is released gradually rather than all at once, application tends to feel closer to a standard facial oil than a typical "active" serum — most people don't notice an obvious tingling or warming sensation, though how any retinol feels will vary from one person's skin to the next.

Layering it with the rest of your routine

Retinol 3TR™ is designed to be the last step of an evening routine, applied after cleansing (and after any water-based serums) and before your night moisturiser. It isn't intended to be layered with exfoliating acids or other vitamin A products on the same night — combining actives increases the chance of irritation without adding benefit, so it's worth keeping retinol nights separate from any AHA/BHA exfoliation nights until you know how your skin responds. In the morning, a broad-spectrum SPF matters more than usual while retinol is part of your routine, in line with Medik8's CSA Philosophy of vitamin C and SPF by day, vitamin A by night.

What to expect over time

Retinol works by supporting the skin's natural turnover and collagen-related processes, which is a gradual mechanism rather than an overnight one. Most people don't see a dramatic change after a few applications — the appearance of fine lines, uneven texture and dullness typically starts to shift only with consistent, regular use over several weeks, and results will vary from person to person. If your skin is reacting rather than adjusting — persistent redness, flaking or discomfort that doesn't settle — that's a sign to ease off frequency rather than push through.

Who it's aimed at

Medik8 positions 3TR as the entry point into its retinol range — the strength to reach for if you've never used retinol before, if you're moving up from a gentler vitamin A derivative, or if stronger retinol products have irritated your skin in the past. It's also the strength Medik8's own guidance points people back towards regardless of age or skin concern, as the starting rung before working up through the range.

It isn't aimed at experienced retinol users looking for a stronger or faster-acting formula — for that, Medik8's range includes higher-strength options built for skin that's already built up tolerance.

How to use it

Retinol 3TR™ is a PM-only product. Apply it to clean, dry skin in the evening, after cleansing and before your night moisturiser. Retinol is broken down by UV light, and skin using it is generally more sun-sensitive, so a daily SPF the following morning matters more than usual while it's in your routine — that's the logic behind Medik8's own CSA Philosophy of vitamin C and SPF by day, vitamin A by night.

As with any retinol, the general approach is to introduce it gradually rather than applying it nightly from the outset — a few evenings a week to begin with, building up frequency as your skin adjusts. If you experience persistent irritation, easing off and building back up more slowly is the standard approach; a pharmacist, dermatologist or one of our Academy team can advise on pacing if you're unsure.

Where it sits in Medik8's retinol range

Medik8 sells more than one 0.3% retinol product, which can make choosing between them confusing. Retinol 3TR™ is the original formula — retinol, jojoba oil, Vitamin E and Time Release Technology, nothing more. Intelligent Retinol TR uses the same Time Release approach but adds climbazole, an ingredient included to help the retinol stay active in the skin for longer, and comes in three strengths (3TR, 6TR and 10TR) so you can progress within that line as tolerance builds.

Medik8's Crystal Retinal range is a separate line built around a different vitamin A derivative rather than retinol itself, aimed at people who want a different route into vitamin A. We've compared the two approaches directly in Crystal Retinal vs Intelligent Retinol TR, and if you're specifically weighing up beginner options, our best Medik8 retinol for beginners guide covers where 3TR fits against the rest of the starting-strength options.

Our verdict

Retinol 3TR™ does what it's designed to do: it gives first-time or sensitised retinol users a genuinely gentle way to start, without diluting the formula down to something that barely qualifies as a retinol product. The jojoba base and Time Release delivery are sensible, well-thought-through choices rather than marketing dressing, and 0.3% is a realistic starting concentration rather than a token one. Where it falls short is for anyone who's already retinol-tolerant and wants a noticeably stronger night serum — that's a reason to look further up Medik8's range, not a mark against 3TR itself.
